The Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Missouri
The Juniors Committee
A
child or grandchild of a member of the Society of Mayflower
Descendants in the State of Missouri may be eligible, beginning at
birth, for membership as a Missouri Mayflower Society Junior. The
applicant must be nominated by a current member of the Mayflower
Society, and there is a one-time fee of $25 for Junior membership.
Upon joining, each new
Junior member will receive a packet with a membership certificate and
age-appropriate material about the Pilgrims. The upper age limit for
Junior members is 25 years; between the ages of 18 and 25 years
each Junior member will be welcomed to submit an application for full
adult Mayflower Society Membership. For more information about Mayflower Juniors membership,
contact Juniors Chairman Barbara Morris.
The Education Committee
The
General Society of Mayflower Descendants in Plymouth, Massachusetts,
has prepared educational materials about the Mayflower Pilgrims
for use in Fifth Grade Social Studies classes, in which fifth grade
students learn about American History. The Missouri Mayflower Society
Education Committee recently has begun a program to distribute the
General Society of Mayflower Descendants "Coming to America" Fifth
Grade educational packets in Missouri schools or district resource
centers. The Education Committee also has copies of the General Society
of Mayflower Descendants 15 minute educational DVD "The Mayflower's
Story," which may be borrowed by Society members or teachers for
showing in fifth grade classrooms, or in library-sponsored programs for children.
The Education Committee also recently has begun a scholarship program
for high school seniors in the State of Missouri who are planning to
attend a college or university, in the form of an essay contest on
a topic relating to the Mayflower Pilgrims. The Scholarship presently
is a one-time award of $500, funded by member contributions and
corporate matching grants. During the contest, the
Scholarship Application form is available as a down loadable PDF file
through a link from the Main Page of the Missouri Mayflower Society
website.
